FERRET Page 3

Ferret Scout Car Instructional Model

Located at the Bovington, Museum in England, this interesting exhibit originated at the Driving and Maintenance School at Bovington.  It was to teach students the technical features of Ferret, a type that was in service with the British Army from 1952 up to 1992.  (With the exception of NATO).

As may be seen the Ferret has a rear-engined lay out, a Rolls Royce B60 straight six, petrol unit rated at 129 bhp.  Ferret has a five speed pre-selector gearbox with separate reverse (so the five speeds works in both directions) and a Daimler fluid clutch, all driving through a central differential which distributes drive to  all four wheels via bevel boxes and hub reduction gears.  Each wheel station also has independent suspension.  Notice also how the steering wheel is arranged more or less upside down, which makes it awkward for the driver. This is done in order to conform with the sloping front plate of the vehicle which offers more protection than any other vehicle.
