Abbot was designed in the 1960's as a self propelled piece of artillery. The requirement for mobility closely paralleled that of the FV432 APC which was under development at the same time, both share common components such as power train, suspension and running units.
The driver sits alongside the engine at the right hand
front of the hull, and can operate with his head out or closed down. Crew enters either though the top turret hatches or the large rear door. When closed down under NBC conditions Abbot has a built in NBC pack for clean air. Abbot runs on rubber tracks which make it street legal.
