Chieftain went into service in 1963. Vickers Ltd. was
the manufacture. Chieftain crews four, commander,
loader, gunner and driver. The driver sits centrally in
the front hull. Earlier Chieftains were powered by the
Leyland L60 engine. It could use gas and diesel.
Upgrades were made in the Mk5 to a better engine and
improved transmission system. The transmission provides
6 forward gears and 3 reverse. Chieftains running gear
is similar to the Centurion. When compared with the M60
the Chieftains crew enjoyed a more comfortable ride over
any type terrain.
