The first prototype Saladin was built in 1954.
Production was from 1958 to 1972. Used in over 20
different countries, only Britain and Portugal among
NATO countries took them into service.
The mechanical components are the same as those of the
Saracen except the brakes which are disc type. The B80
engine is mounted in the rear and the driver is seated
in center front. Road speed is about 45 mph and a range
of 250 miles. Saladin has 3 gas tanks that are
interconnected. The turret is manual but has power
assist when really needed, although the turret turns
really easy.
The rear hatches make the engine easy to work on.
